Since we are situated between Waynesville and Maggie Valley we have the opportunity to enjoy all the things each has to offer. Some of the things we love about Maggie Valley and Waynesville include the gorgeous mountains and the quaint town centers, the beautiful low humidity climate and gentle breezes. There is a Facebook page entitled We Love Maggie Valley that shows many of the features of the town. We love the wonderful art offerings in some of the stores in Waynesville, and the numerous restaurants available.
We love to eat at the various restaurants in Maggie Valley and Waynesville. Some of our favorites are J. Arthur's in Maggie Valley, and Bogarts Restaurant & Tavern in Waynesville. All type of cuisine are offered: Italian, Home Cooking, Mexican, Seafood, Bar-B-Que, Oriental -- you name it. And of course up on the Blue Ridge Parkway is a wonderful restaurant called the Pisgah Inn which affords breath taking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Grocery stores are plentiful, and there are many convenience stores to choose from.
Twelve years ago we went looking for a mobile home park where you own the lot. We found Summer Place and were thrilled to find a small cozy community with a mix of park models and several site-built homes like ours. We fell in love with the charm of the beautifully manicured lawns and plantings around the homes, as well as the view of the mountains surrounding it. Our particular home is situated on a nice large corner lot far back from the main road, providing a very quiet atmosphere. One feature my aging knees love is that there are no stairs to climb. The house is handicap accessible.
We love this area because it is centrally located for many of the activities in the Smoky Mountains like water rafting, horse back riding, fishing, hiking, golfing, skiing and just enjoying the mountain scenery, with farms and fields of corn and tobacco.
Waynesville has a wonderful Recreation Center with a pool, inside running track, and all kinds of exercise programs and equipment. There is a nice large dog park also. And there are many churches in the area with their activities. There is a senior center that offers activities such as a book club, computer training, game playing, etc.
We never tire of driving around the area just enjoying the scenery and looking for elk and other wild life.
Of course we all like spending our time on various activities. Ed enjoys gardening and spends hours tending to his various flower plantings around the house. He especially enjoys growing show chrysanthemums that he grows in pots and enters into shows. I enjoy watercolor painting which I began about 10 years ago when I saw the beautiful surrounding landscape here in the Smokies. I love the barns and have painted many different scenes. I started by taking a course at the Haywood Community College, and have continued with lessons locally. There is such an abundance of inspiration in this area to stimulate the creative juices. We really do not want to leave our Petite Chateau (as we called it) but our age and declining health have made it necessary.
Summer Place is a small, friendly community of age 55+ folks, most of whom are there to enjoy the summer months. However, there are several year-rounders in the 80+ residences. It is a beautifully maintained community consisting of park models and small site-built homes. It has a family-like atmosphere, with community activities, cook-outs, bingo, board games, and just sitting on the porch chatting.
Our utility costs are very low - the weather is so beautiful that we rarely have to turn on the air conditioner. We just open the sliders and have an exhaust fan to pull the beautiful breeze through the house. We do have county water and sewer and we are usually at the minimum cost, even with watering the flowers.
