Asheville Municipal Golf Course, Asheville NC

Recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, Asheville Municipal Golf Course is one of the Southeast’s most beloved public layouts. Designed by legendary architect Donald Ross in the 1920s, the course traditionally offered a gentle, open front nine and a more dramatic, tree-lined back nine with classic elevation and strategy. Its historic features, routing, and natural terrain have made it a standout in North Carolina golf history.

In September 2024, Tropical Storm Helene delivered unprecedented flooding to western North Carolina, and Asheville Municipal was among the hardest-hit golf facilities in the region. The Swannanoa River overflowed, submerging and severely damaging the front nine holes, eroding turf, bunkers, irrigation, and pathways, and rendering that portion of the course unplayable. The back nine was cleared and reopened for golf while recovery planning continued.

Rather than abandon this historic landmark, the City of Asheville partnered with preservation experts, designers, and federal recovery agencies to develop a restoration plan that respects the course’s original character and enhances its resilience. Federal funding from FEMA has been allocated toward rebuilding the damaged holes, and during the interim a temporary disc golf course occupies the former front nine to keep the property active for the community.

With its historic designation, restoration underway, and the back nine playable today, Asheville Municipal stands not only as a competitive and scenic golf experience but also as a testament to resilience and community investment in one of North Carolina’s most storied public golf courses. Rated four stars by Golf Magazine readers, Broadmoor is known as the area’s only true links-style golf course, offering a completely different playing experience from the mountain layouts typically found in Western North Carolina.

Unlike many courses in the region, Broadmoor features wide-open playing corridors with no homes lining the fairways, creating a peaceful, natural setting with uninterrupted views. Black Mountain Golf Club (Black Mountain, NC)

Tucked against the Blue Ridge backdrop just east of Asheville, Black Mountain Golf Club is a classic hometown course with big personality. Don’t let the “short layout” label fool you, this track proves that golf doesn’t have to be long to be memorable. With three sets of tee boxes, the course plays friendly and fun for newer golfers while still offering plenty of strategy and shot-making for better players looking for a challenge.

The design rewards smart positioning, control, and confidence on and around the greens. You’ll find holes that invite an aggressive play when you’re swinging well, but the course also demands respect with its elevation changes, tree-lined looks, and a handful of holes where accuracy off the tee sets the tone for the entire scorecard. It’s the kind of place where you can play it once and enjoy it; but play it twice and start to understand the angles.

Signature Feature - The Par-6 Hole

One of the biggest reasons golfers seek out Black Mountain Golf Club is its rare par‑6, a bucket-list hole that turns a normal round into a story you’ll tell later. This isn’t a gimmick hole. It’s a true multi‑shot challenge that rewards patience, great rhythm, and smart club selection. For long hitters it’s a chance to attack in stages; for everyone else, it’s a strategic adventure where a “safe” score still feels like a win.

High Vista Country Club in Mills River, North Carolina

Course identity and design

High Vista Country Club is a classic mountain golf experience in the area, featuring dramatic elevation changes, winding fairways, and long, scenic corridors through mature hardwoods, exactly the kind of “golf near Asheville” round that feels like you’ve climbed into the Blue Ridge. Official community history identifies as the original architect choice for the championship course when the community formed in 1976, with the intent to build a private club and route holes across the best land on the mountain.

From a playing perspective, this is not a flat “grip-and-rip” layout. It’s a shot-shaping and distance-control course where you’re frequently choosing clubs based on stance, wind, and elevation, not just yardage. Golf directories describe the course as sculpted into a natural setting with a traditional mountain mix of pines/hardwoods and water features, and note that multiple tee options allow the course to fit a wide range of golfers.

The facility was renovated in 2022

Recent improvements and upgrades

  • A new golf shop facility and improved guest staging/arrival

  • Brand new golf carts in service

  • New flags/pins and updated directional signage

  • Ongoing bunker repairs and continued cart path improvements
